This picnic shelter sits immediately beside Connecticut Route 6, at the trailhead of the blue-blazed trail leading into the Shade Swamp Wildlife Management Area. It was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a New Deal program that operated between 1933 and 1942. The program provided work for unmarried, unemployed men who were struggling to find work during the Great Depression.
