airport, return (military)
In 1954 the US Army built Emery Army Airfield on the "Schenkenfeld". It replaced Leighton AAF also at Würzburg. In 1961, the airfield was taken over by the community but the eastern part was still militarily used. Around 1961, the US Army constructed a tactical site next to the airfield for an Army HAWK air defense unit. Missile hardstands and supporting buildings were built and can still be seen today. Emery Barracks were closed on 17.09.1992 and the airfield probably around the same date. The airfield is since only being used by light civil aircraft.
