As of its listing on the NRHP in 2014, this home was occupied by the seventh generation of the Cowles family. William Brown Cowles, the second generation to occupy the house, was a pioneer of the electroplating process used to produce silver-plated wares. Though he himself was not successful in the business of silver-plating, Cowles' expertise would spur on a number of local silver-plating and silverware-producing companies, an industry for which Connecticut was renowned in the 19th and 20th centuries.
