estate (manor / mansion land)  Add category

Eothen, the estate in the Montauk Moorlands was originally a single seasonal fishing cottage built in 1905. It was replaced with five white Colonial Revival-style cottages designed by Rolf W. Bauhan, for Richard E. Church {Arm and Hammer Baking Products family}. Church first bought the land from Arthur Bensen, who owned much of Montauk, in 1898. The estate didn't change hands until 1971, when Paul Morrissey and Andy Warhol were driven down the dirt road after viewing multiple properties across the east end, while Warhol was renting in Southampton. They purchased the 22-acre property for $225,000. It became a legendary hangout for various famous people until Warhol's death in 1987. Morrissey continued to own the cottages and 5.6 acres until the estate was sold in early 2007 for $27 million. Much of the land is now a preserve.
