Des Moines River High Trestle Bridge (Ankeny to Woodward Trail) | pedestrian bridge, rail-trail

USA / Iowa / Madrid /
 pedestrian bridge, rail-trail, bridge

The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad crossed the Des Moines River here from 1882 until 1980. The CNW continued to run this as a branch line to Woodward until 2002.
See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milwaukee_Road for history

The original railroad bridge iron crossbeams were removed in 2006, leaving only the pillars. In 2009-2010 concrete cross beams were placed between the existing pillars for construction of a multi-use (bicycling, hiking, horseback riding) trail.

  • Actually, the Milwaukee Road left in 1980 but the CNW continued to run this as a branch line to Woodward until 2002. The huge but relatively little used bridge was removed in 2006, leaving only the pillars. Supposedly there might be a hiking/biking bridge built here.
