Civil War battle which took place here on 29 June 1862 between the Union army under Edwin V. Sumner and the Confederates under John B. Magruder. The battle was largely a stalemate, though the Union army evacuated this position the next morning on their way across the White Oak Swamp. The Confederates moved forward in pursuit. Casualties were high on both sides.
