Dhekelia British Base, located on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, is one of the two Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) retained by the United Kingdom following Cyprus's independence in 1960. These areas, Akrotiri and Dhekelia, cover approximately 98 square miles, with Dhekelia encompassing about 50.5 square miles.
Situated northeast of Larnaca on the northern shore of Larnaca Bay, Dhekelia is approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Larnaca and 20 kilometers west of Ayia Napa. The base is home to around 1,250 personnel, including military members, civil servants, families, and contracted personnel. Additionally, approximately 350 locally employed civilians work on the station daily.
Dhekelia Station is responsible for providing support to operations, units, and organizations in a sustainable and proactive manner. The base includes various facilities such as Alexander Barracks, Kingsfield Airfield, 16 Flight (which features hangars and a short runway), a military cemetery, and recreational facilities adjacent to the beach.
The Sovereign Base Areas, including Dhekelia, are governed by the British Forces Cyprus administration. These areas are used for military training, operations, and as a base for British forces in the region. The British Army garrisons these bases with soldiers who stand ready to support the UK's response to crises in the region.
Dhekelia also features a hospital and a small airfield, contributing to its strategic importance in the region.
Overall, Dhekelia British Base plays a vital role in supporting British military operations and maintaining a presence in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
