Yaroslavl' Oil Refinery is the largest oil refinery plant situated in the northern part of Russia. The Yaroslavl Refinery was founded in 1879. The key activity of the Yaroslavl Mendeleyev Refinery is to output petroleum products from base oils and crude oil. The plant was actively re-built and enlarged during the period between 1952 and 1961 and the new residential blocks were built for the plant' workers and engineers on the area located to the right side of Moscovsky avenue (towards Moscow). The unofficial name of this residential neighborhoods and later the whole southern part of the sity "Neftestroy" is derived from the phrase "built by oil refinery". Since 1960's this common name of the area used by locals more often than the official one - Krasnoperekopsky District.
