Fort Belvedere was built 1750-1755, for Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, younger son of George II and Queen Caroline, famous for his role in the Battle of Culloden.
Used as a hunting lodge it was designed a a fake fort and overlooked the nearby lake at Virginia Water where the Duke of Cumberland maintained a large Chinese Yacht for lunch parties.
In 1911 it became the home of the Duke of Connaught.
From 1929 it was given to the then Prince of Wales [later King Edward VIII] and was the setting of his 1936 Abdication of the Throne.
