The castle of Gioia Sannitica was built by the Normans and maintained under the Hohenstaufen and Angevins. In 1394, however, it was seriously damaged by an earthquake. This, and the depopulation of the area due to plague outbreaks, led to the abandonment of the castle and the small village that had grown around it in the 15th century. Today the structure is in ruins.
