archaeological site, Roman Empire, ancient ruins

The ancient Roman settlement of Burnum was located southwest of Knin. The town originated as a military camp with its characteristic blunted-corner rectangular shape. The amphitheater is located some distance to the west of the fortified perimeter. It was established in the 1st century BC, and was destroyed in the 6th century AD during the wars between the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) emperor Justinian I and the Ostrogoths.
