apartment building, postmodern (architecture)
171-foot, 18-story Postmodern residential building completed in 1998. Designed by Schuman, Lichtenstein, Claman & Efron, it is clad in orange and beige brick above a rusticated limestone ground floor. Although the building has an official address of 189 West 89th, the main entrance is actually centered on Amsterdam Avenue's 16-bay frontage. The entrance is in the two center bays, which are split into three at the lower two floors, where the limestone piers extend up to a stone band across the top of the 2nd floor above the entrance. There is a bronze-and-glass revolving door in the center, and bronze-framed single glass door and windows on either side. A large, square bronze-and-black-metal marquee cover the middle bay and the inner part of the two side bays at the entrance. The 2nd floor above the entrance has a central double-window and tripartite windows in the other two bays, with bronze framing. The rest of the ground floor along the avenue is organized into grey-brown metal-and-glass storefronts.
The 2-bay section above the entrance is beige brick and has tripartite windows in grey metal framing. To either side is a red brick section with a tripartite window and two bays of double-windows. Further out are 4-bay end sections of beige brick, with two tripartite windows flanking two double-windows. The beige-bricks sections all projecting slightly from the red brick ones. There are metal air-conditioning vents set below the windows, except in the two center bays, where they are incorporated into the lower panes. The end bays set back above the 14th floor, and the next inner bays set back above the 16th floor.
On the south facade, the limestone cladding on the ground floor continues onto the west half of the building, where there are three bays of show-windows. The east half is banded brick and has a service entrance with metal-and-glass double-doors and metal service doors at the far end. The east bay, with tripartite windows, terminates at the 5th floor. To the west there are two bays of double-windows (the 2nd one changing to single-windows beginning at the 6th floor), a bay of paired windows (changing to single-windows beginning at the 6th floor, and two bays of double-windows, the first one with vents below them.
The limestone also wraps around onto the north facade on 90th Street for three bays. The rest of the banded brick ground floor has only one brown metal service door, and at the east end are an entrance and exit to the underground parking garage. The upper floors at the east end have two bays of tripartite windows flanking a bay of double-windows, terminating at the 7th floor. Two more double-windows, a tripartite window, and a single-window continue west and terminate at the 8th floor. The west part of the facade extends up to the 14th-floor setback, with a single-window paired with a double-window, another double-window, a single-window, and two double-windows at the west end.
The east elevation has exposed floor plates and the south end has three bays of double-windows. To the north is a recessed section that has a tripartite window, and a small single-window paired with double-windows. The non-recessed north half has a tripartite window, a double-window, another tripartite window paired with a double-window, and five more double-windows bays. A brick-clad mechanical bulkhead and water tower enclosure rises from the center of the roof.
The building contains 265 apartment units. The ground floor along the avenue is occupied by New York Kids Club at the south end.
