This was one of the earliest agricultural complexes in this region of Colorado, and is additionally important for its association with two men:
- William Craig - U.S. Army officer who helped settle the area while fending off Native American attacks. Craig also ran unsuccessfully for governor of Colorado as a Democratic party candidate.
- Benjamin F. Butler - prominent attorney and politician who was a friend and representative of Craig. Butler obtained the ranch after Craig's departure, though most of his life was spent in Massachusetts where he served in both the House of Representatives and Senate, and eventually served as the state's governor.
