STATE LINE interlocking is a large rail junction on the state line of IL and IN. Currently it consists of the at-trade crossings of the former B&OCT (now CSX), NKP (now NS), the South Shore line and the IHB. The junction used to also feature the Erie RR main line as well as the Monon RR connection.

STATE LINE was notable for its interlocking tower which contained the largest mechanical lever frame ever installed in North America with well over 200 levers.

The tower was closed and demolished in 2000.

  • The plant at one point had over 40 diamonds!!! Of course at that time there were over 30 class 1 roads opperating in the US and plenty more shortlines. It is sad that these railroad mile stones and pieces of important US history are now gone and viewed as eyesores by some people, which is a shame. We need to preserve for our children and grand children. Anyway this plant was a marvel of science and engineering and people can't take away the memory of this railroading icon.
