The ruined site of Baibaliq or Baibalik ("rich city") is located on the north bank of a northern tributary of the Selenge river west of Khutag Under. The medieval city was established as a northern administrative center of the Uighur Qaghanate in about 757, built on the qaghan's orders by Sogdian and Chinese laborers. It survived into the Mongol period, when it served as a center for goldsmiths and jewelers. The city's location is marked by at least three rectangular walled enclosures, the largest of which lies to the west, the smallest to the southeast, on the riverbank, and the middle to the northeast; these appear to correspond to different stages in the settlement's history.
