Twin Caves at Krape Park is a well-known landmark in Freeport. The caves, discovered in 1861, along Yellow Creek are only available by boat (except in deep winter when the creek freezes over).
Four hundred and fifty million years ago, the whole central United States was a shallow sea with layers of seashells and seashell fragments building up layers on the sea floor. The layered rock at Twin Caves and the other exposures around the park are the compacted remains of those layers.”
