residence, Tudor (architecture)
Estate home built c. 1931 in the Tudor Revival style for Frederick B. Rentschler {industrialist} who was a founder of Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. The majestic estate featured whimsical touches like brass fixtures designed in the shape of a Pratt & Whitney WASP engine. Its wing containing guest rooms and the ballroom were torn down by the family at the beginning of WWII without clearcut explanation.
It was occupied by the family until 1953 when his wife, Faye, died. The estate was taken over by the school in 1956 and is adaptively reused as the main campus building. The lower school now occupies the former estate of the other founder of Pratt & Whitney as well.
