There has been a hostelry on this site since 1868 when the architect Edward Paraire, who specialised in pubs and chapels, designed a building, located within the ground, with a graceful wrought iron balcony. His building was controversially demolished almost a century later, when the SW corner of Lord's was redeveloped and the current building was built, next to the Grace Gate, in 1967.
