Johnson City's main post office, construction began on July 29, 1972 and completed around September 1973, it was opened on December 8, 1973 at 10am by postmaster Fred R. Lockett, Jr. The city's post office was established on July 10, 1857 by postmaster and first mayor Henry Johnson, the city was named Johnson's Depot at that time. It was originally located at the railroad depot in downtown, relocated six times to the Harr Building at the corner of Market St. and Fountain Square in early 1885, the Harr-Burrow Building at the corner of Main and Spring Sts. in September 1890, the G.C. Harris Building at Main St. on October 21, 1897, the William G. Mathes Building at 227 E Main St. (currently Capone's) on June 6, 1901, the federal building at 401 Ashe St. (currently vacant) on December 10, 1910, and then to the white marble building at 338 E Main St. (currently WJHL-TV studio) on March 14, 1938.

Susan J. Frazier is now the postmaster of this post office since July 11, 2015

In August 2021, Johnson City commissioners reached out to the United States Postal Service to convey the city’s intention not to renew the lease, which has been in place since 1973. It has expired on August 30, 2023. The city is currently helping the USPS relocate the main post office, the new location would most likely to be at the former Kennametal Corp. building at 128 Roweland Dr., which is 3½ miles from this location. This current post office will still be in operation for local mailing only.
