Kheremt Tal

Mongolia / Arhangaj / Cecerleg /
 archeological site, ancient ruins

The archaeological site of Kheremt Tal or Dörvöljin Kherem in the Tamir valley of Central Mongolia has been tentatively identified as a ceremonial center of the Xiongnu. The precise date and purpose of the remains, however, is unclear, and the location or even existence of any fixed center of the Xiongnu remain disputed. The impressive site of Kheremt Tal has thus far failed to yield artifacts that can be dated precisely enough to prove the site's chronological placement and cultural attribution. The Tamiryn Ulaan Khoshuu burial ground some 7 km to the southeast, however, does date to the Xiongnu period. If the two sites are associated, this might support a Xiongnu identification for Kheremt Tal.
