Radio Controlled Aircraft Target (RCAT) Field

USA / New York / Montauk /

During the post-WWII years, the Anti-Aircraft Artillery units of Camp Hero used targets to practice their firing skills. For this, they used sleeve targets towed by Army range boats and realistic RC planes such as those shown in the above picture that were used by AAA units in Germany. The target-tow boats were used to both tow and retrieve targets and RCATs used for gun practice, as well as clear the area of civilian ship traffic before the firing began.

The RCATs were operated by the 40th AAA Detachment (RCAT) and launched from this site. Aerial imagery from 1954 shows this area cleared of vegetation and what appears to be a small concrete platform in the middle of the circle.
