Built after 1250 by a congregation of Beguines and Beguards, it became a community of Franciscan tertiaries in 1288. Temporarily abandoned at the end of the 14th century. and again in the 16th century, the convent experienced a gradual flowering from 1580 and a period of prosperity in the 18th century. Following repeated floods, the convent buildings were rebuilt in a higher position on the model of a patrician residence (1684-93, restored in 1986-88); only the chapel of the medieval complex was preserved, located on the banks of the Muota.
