church, ruins, archaeological site, Medieval / Middle Ages
The ruined medieval church of Saint Scíre, an Irish princess who founded this monastic establishment, is located within an old graveyard on the southwestern edge of modern Kilskeer (which is named after that very church). The church was plundered by the Vikings in the 10th century, and then by the Irish king Diarmaid in the 12th. After the English conquest, it served as the parish church. It was becoming dilapidated in the 17th century; today it is in complete ruin. To the southwest there are ruined remains of a tower or tower house.
