ALIPORE
Alipore is a beautiful, picturesque village situated on the National Highway No. 8, which is one of the busiest highway in India. It is about 55 kms. from Surat, 236 kms. from Mumbai and 310 kms. from Ahmedabad. Alipore is surrounded by many villages. It comes under Chikhli Taluka, which has a majority community of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes. There are various institutions in the vicinity of Alipore like School, Colleges, Banks, Mosques, Temples, Derasar, Madressas, Post-Offices, Restaurants, Hotels, Shopping Complexes, and so on. But one thing which is of utmost importance and without which all the materials and wealth of the human race comes to a nought, stares out starkly in the face of all the residents. That is, concern for the health.
Yes, there was no well-equipped and economical hospital or proper healthcare centre here. Hence at times critically ill patients and accident victims, on the busy highway No.8 are rushed to Surat or Mumbai, due to lack of infrastructure here. Often there are fatal outcomes.
With the view to address such problems, a group of social workers came forward and organized themselves to do something in this noble cause. 'Alipore Social Welfare Trust' came into being with the valuable guidance from the elders, like Mr. Ismail Hassan Mayet 'Jawahar', whose frequent advices and encouragement will be always remembered.
HISTORY OF ALIPORE SOCIAL WELFARE TRUST
In 1994, a group of friends, namely - Hassan Ismail Mayet, Bashir Ebrahim Karolia, Yusuf Fakir Loonat and Late Abbasbhai Vali Mulla were sitting at Hafezi Mohalla in Alipore at the ancestral house of Br. Masumbhai Balla who was to return to the UK. There were many topics discussed and the most alarming and concerning topic was Health Problems faced by the villagers due to Malaria Epidemic and 1992 Riots. With this topic discussed further it was decided without seeking advice from any elders in India or abroad to form a Trust which was named Alipore Social Welfare Trust.
Br. Bashir Karolia, Br Yusuf Loonat and Br. Hassan Mayet approached Br. Abdul Hai Gajaria, Br. Gulam Nabi Laher and Br Ashraf Vali to join as the Trustee which was named Alipore Social Welfare Trust. It was decided to start a Charitable Dispensary which will have a doctor serving the patients for 2 hrs daily. It was mutually agreed that the cost initially would be shared by the board members with major contribution from Br Hassan Mayet. It was decided that the trust should be registered and first advice was sought from Late Haji Ahmed Maniyar, whose suggestions in drafting the Trust Deed was well appreciated by the Board Members.
Alipore Social Welfare Trust (ASWT) was registered on 30th of November 1994 with following aims and objectives, at the Registrar of Charity Commissioner's Office, Surat.
Having setup these aims and objectives, the trustees went ahead with establishing a Charitable Dispensary.
CHARITABLE DISPENSARY
It was decided that the Charitable Dispensary will be situated at Br A Hai Gajaria House which was occupied on a monthly rental basis and as soon as we started the Dispensary the first donation received from abroad was from Mohammed Aminbhai Gajaria, which came as an encouragement.
On the event of Opening of the Charitable Dispensary, Late Ismail Hassan Mayet Jawahar, (May Almighty accept his generous contribution and grant him magfirat Ameen!) were impressed with the dedication and identified this group of members as Aspiring Group of individuals and extended his support to any cost incurred to the Trust, which he regularly contributed to all expenditures on one condition to keep proper records and as the trust was registered. The Contribution were never with any Terms and Conditions and were Never Binding to any board members which we all appreciate and shall remember for the long time.
There were two Resident Doctors. ASWT is proud to have one male Doctor and one female Doctor on resident basis.
On weekly-basis E.N.T. surgeon Dr. Sanjay .P. Shah visits Jawahar Nursing Home, since its inception, for which the organisers are thankful to him.
All the services rendered are FREE OF COST for the poor sections of the society, irrespective of caste, creed, colour, race or religion. Patients with a good economical status have to pay a reasonable (affordable) fees.
ASWT also organised Eye camps, where optical lenses were distributed, free eye check-ups were done, Cataract Operations were performed Free of Cost, for the poor and needy patients.
Then after getting good response from everywhere, a clinic was started, namely, Jawahar Nursing Home, with the provision for admitting five inpatients on a day-stay basis.
JAWAHAR NURSING HOME
After getting overwhelming response to the Charitable Dispensary, the Board of Trustees decided to start a Day-Care Centre with four beds as a small nursing home with a Full Time Doctor residing in Alipore. A proposal was put to Late Haji Ismail Hassan Mayet Jawahar, who accepted the proposal. Due to the generous contributions, moral and financial support from Late Haji Ismail Mayet Jawahar, the Board of Trustees named this Day-Care Centre as Jawahar Nursing Home. We all appreciate and acknowledge the contribution towards healthcare of the donations received through Donation Drives amongst their friends organised by Yusuf Chacha Mayet and YusufChacha Karolia for Jawahar Nursing Home.
Jawahar Nursing Home and Charitable Dispensary also provides medicines at the lowest rate. The out-patients and in-patients turnout encouraged the trustees and the elders to come out with the idea of setting up a big general hospital or a healthcare with latest facilities.
A project of a small hospital building was first submitted to Late Haji Ismailmama Mayet who suggested that the project was too small in the long-run and hence a bigger Hospital Building Project was initiated with the appointment of proper architect and structural engineers.
ALIPORE HOSPITAL BUILDING PROJECT
The success at Jawahar Nursing Home was such that our inspiration, Late Ismailbhai Mayet Jawahar called all the Board Members and asked them to make a project for a Hospital Project. For this purpose, many land were chosen and after the discussion between Late Ismailbhai Mayet and other elders, it was decided to build a hospital along the National Highway No. 8.
Having envisaged a big Multidisciplinary hospital, the trustees went ahead with an eye for a proper land that should be on the National highway No. 8, for the project. When you put selflessness before self, the Almighty and the Most Merciful God always to your help. A suitable land was found on the National Highway No. 8. a very kindhearted and generous person, none other than, LateHaji Ahmedbhai Maniyar, who needs no introduction for his contributions to the various institutions, came forward with such a land. ASWT shall always remember this kind gesture.
The plan for the proposed hospital, which would be named as 'ALIPORE HOSPITAL', henceforth, was finalized and approved by various Government Departments and then passed by the District Development Authority, Government of Gujarat.
It was decided that the hospital building will be a two-storeyed building (ground floor plus two floors), with a total construction in the campus of around 80,000 square feet. The proposed Alipore Hospital constructions are to be looked after by the Trustees, Architect, Mrs. Mamta S. Shah of Smit Associates of Billimora, Structural Consultant Mr. Utpal Desai from Valsad, Dr. Sanjay P. Shah and other advisors of the ASWT.
It was also decided that the Alipore Hospital shall have modern equipment and that an Ambulance service shall be introduced for the first time in the region. And in future there shall be a Mobile Medical Aid Van to facilitate patients from remote villages.
The total number of patients expected (indoor and outpatients) would be about 100 per day for the first year, with about three or four operations conducted per day. In the subsequent years, the number shall increase by 25% for indoor and outpatients.
The hospital shall have around 125 beds, with Deluxe Rooms, Semi-Deluxe Rooms, General Ward for males, General Wards for females, Operation Theaters, Recovery Rooms, Incentive Care Units, Gynecological Departments, Laboratory, X-Ray Room, Sonography Room, a prayer hall [each for male and females], a chemist, a canteen and public call booth.
Considering the lower economic status of the people in and around Alipore, the hospital will run mostly on charitable basis. The hospital would charge affordable fees for the services rendered such as, consultation fees, operations, indoor and outdoor patients fees, etc.
The maintenance of the proposed Alipore hospital would be around Rs.350,000/- per month, including the salaries to the staffs, electricity bills, telephone bills, medicines, maintenance of instruments and equipment's, maintenance of building.
After seeking the necessary permissions, the construction work was started with the contributions mainly from Late Haji Ismail Hassan Mayet Jawahar, who time and again inspired and motivated the Board Members for the hospital project.
