church, monastery
Selby was probably the first abbey to be founded in the north after the Norman invasion of 1066, as a Benedictine monastery.
The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII but its church building has remained in use as a place of worship.
Seriously damaged by fire in 1906, the abbey was successfully and sensitively restored in sympathy with its original design.
