Runway 6/24 was commissioned on 10th May 2006 as the second runway at Mangalore Airport(IATA:IXE, ICAO:VOML. This is the first concrete airport in Karnataka State. With its commission, Mangalore became the first airport in Karnataka to have more than one airstrip. It was also the first runway in any airport of Karnataka state.

Runway 6/24 has an overall length of 2900m from threshold to threshold and a width of 45m. Official span of the actual run length air strip is 2450m. There are two RESA spans 60m each at both ends. The remaining length consists of Chevrons and Safe Overrun Pavements in either concrete or asphalt.

This runway is designed as "Table-Top", an air-strip prepared at a plateau in comparison to its surrounding low-lying area. RW6/24 has a vicinity that runs low upto 60meters deeper at SW end and to up to 80meters deep at NE end within 500m laterals.

In addition, the runway itself has considerable grade-down on the 24-6 axis within it's strip span.

With such prevailing topographic conditions, the landing/take-off from the two runways at Mangalore Airport IXE is considered relatively tough. Apart from modern automated safety maneuver systems, the operation calls for crucial pilot interventions.

On 22 May, 2010, at 6.10 AM, Air India Express Flight IX-812, a Boeing 737-800, flying en route Dubai-Mangalore overshot the runway 24 on landing at the airport, killing 158 passengers and 6 crew on-board, only 6 survived. The light pre-monsoon weather may have caused a greasy surface resulting in the overshot beyond the challenging hilltop runway. The aircraft flew into the woods at a ravine beyond the runway. Possibly due to a burst tyre in addition, the aircraft deviated and hit a localizer antenna striping the belly of the vessel through bottom and inflaming in the course. Having had fully re-fueled at the origin (Dubai Airport - DXB), it immediately caught fire explosively and got destroyed beyond shape and structure.

  • New runway can handle any size aircraft.
  • It is great, now we have International flights landing here.
  • does the new runway have capacity of handling boeing747 please reply
  • nope...tis runway cant handle..as a Boeing B747 or an airbus A380 needs 12000ft or more (4kms)..but it can a B777 or B787 or A321 or A330!!!
  • Well any airbus 330 if to land still requires 300 mtr mr to land safely.
  • Well After the incident of IX 812(VT-AXV, it raises the doubt on the safety of runway06/24 as there is no room for error ( as there is no space in case a airliner overshoots or glides away from its path). its really sad event that took 158 lifes.
