The Oaks Landfill is situated on an approximately 550-acre site of which about 185 acres were used for waste disposal. The landfill is south of Laytonsville along Maryland Route 108. This facility stopped accepting waste in late 1997, and final closure construction was completed in January 2001. Closure construction included the placement of a multi-layered final cover over the waste that includes two feet of soil over existing waste, a 40 mil synthetic geomembrane, a geocomposite drainage layer which sits on the geomembrane, two feet of final soil cover over the geocomposite and the establishment of grass and vegetation on the surface (see cap detail). 40 acres of the landfill were capped using a similar design with slightly different materials while the landfill was still operating.
