The second oldest part of the Institute of Agricultural resources and Economics (AREI). Stende Research center is the successor of the State Stende Breeding station, which was established by Latvia's government in 1922, on the basis of former Stende manor, nationalised within the Agrarian reform. This was the first state-established breeding station in Latvia.
In ninety years of its activity Stende breeders have established more than 65 varieties, among them barley ‘Kristaps', oat ‘Laima’, winter wheat ‘Fredis’, spring wheat ‘Uffo', red clover ‘Dižstende’ as the most popular.
Nowadays Stende Research center, being a part of AREI, still deals with the selection of crops and seed breeding.
