trail, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic district
This is a short segment of the Switzerland Trail, the former route of the Denver, Boulder and Western Railway. Laid between the 1880s and 1890s, the 3-foot narrow-gauge railroad served as the primary mode of bulk transportation in this mountainous mining region. Today, the tracks have been removed but the road bed remains. A 35.4 mile stretch of the trail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic district. The historic district follows the road bed through the towns of Ward, Gold Hill, Nederland and Eldora.
