Municipio de Matamoros.
In 1929 A.Y. Baker and Joe Pate, owners of other bridges across the Rio Grande, built one here to profit from US prohibition. Rio Rico soon grew explosively at the site of tiny Nueva Mercedes, with cantinas, saloons, shops, gambling, dog tracks, and prostitution. The town grew southward and, unknowingly, into US territory inside the Horcon Tract. A 1941 flood wiped out the bridge and the Mexican customs booth which moved to Progreso, and the town declined.
