The town of Halcyon was founded in 1903 as a Theosophical intentional community and is the home and headquarters of a religious organization, The Temple of the People. From 1905 to 1949, the Temple of the People operated the Halcyon Hotel & Sanitarium out of the former Coffee Adam Rice mansion in Oceano along Highway 1.
