In 1857 Alanson Harris established his agricultural implement business in Beamsville, Ontario. Moving to Brantford in 1871, Harris incorporated in 1881 and produced harvesting machinery, mowers, reapers and self binders at its plant on the south side of Colborne Street below George Street. Seeking a larger site to permit expansion, a new plant was erected on Market Street South in 1882.

Harris amalgamated with Toronto based farming equipment rival, Massey Company in 1891 to become Massey-Harris. Further amalgamation in 1958 resulted in a name change to Massey-Ferguson. Three years later, in 1961 the City of Brantford purchased 16.5 acres of Massey-Ferguson's Market Street South property and subsequently constructed the Brantford Civic Center on the site.
