Wisma Fui Chiu (Kuala Lumpur)

Malaysia / Kuala Lumpur / Kuala Lumpur / Petaling Street, 8-12
store / shop, office building, shopping centre

Address:
Wisma Fui Chiu
No. 8-12, Jalan Petaling
50000 Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia

Built in the late 1930's, Wisma Fui Chiu is a department store located next to Chinatown (Jalan Petaling). This old building is owned by Selangor Fui Chiu Association, one of the most powerful Chinese clan associations on the Malay Peninsular. This building used to be the clan headquarters, providing offices for the Malaya Communist Party and Zhigong Party until these groups were declared illegal in July 1948. During the outbreak of World War II, the Fui Chiu clan formed a battalion of Malayan Chinese to fight for the army of resistance against the Japanese invader.

Today, what became of the Fui Chiu clan after the war ended is unknown, but rumor has it, many of the clan members were simply disappeared or possibly slaughtered by the Japanese and left to rot in the remote Malayan jungle. Now, what remains of the clan history is this quaint old building.
