This overgrown mound is the site of the old Kinnitty Castle (destroyed 1209 and rebuilt 1213), south of the present 17th-century building (rebuilt in the 19th century as part of the Gothic revival movement). Because of later landscaping, it is difficult to identify the castle specifically as an Anglo-Norman motte (which it is widely supposed to have been).
