The Pelham Bay Landfill was opened from the early 1963 until it was closed in 1978. While it initially operated as a "household waste" site, controversy began when "mob-connected" bribers began illegally dumping toxic waste. Because it was unknown until 1982, when a sanitation worker was tried and convicted, a greal deal of toxic waste has runoff into the Eastchester Bay. Today, Patricia v City of New York, is attempting to sue the city for the damage from the toxic dumping. They believe there is a direct link between the illegal toxic waste and the cancer clusters of leukemia that are prevalent in Country Club, Pelham Bay, City Island, and Spencer Estates.
