Formerly the second location of the Chabot Observatory. It was originally located in downtown Oakland from 1883 to 1915, then moved to this location in 1915 due to increasing light pollution. The site hosted two telescopes here: the original 1883 8-inch Alvan Clarke and Sons telescope “Leah” that was once located in downtown Oakland's Lafayette Square, and the new 20-inch Warner and Swasey telescope named “Rachel.”

In 1977, seismic safety concerns terminated public school students’ access to the original observatory facility. The observatory building remained open to the general public, but school activities were limited to outlying classroom buildings and the planetarium. This location closed in 1999 and the center, now known as the Chabot Space & Science Center, reopened at its new location on Skyline Boulevard in 2000.
