San Leandro Naval Hospital (Oakland, California)

USA / California / San Leandro / Oakland, California
Second World War 1939-1945, hospital, closed / former military, historical layer / disappeared object, United States Navy

Due to an overwhelming need for neuropsychiatric care during WWII, a 500-bed hospital was commissioned on 15 August 1944 specifically to treat sailors and Marines with “war neurosis” and “combat fatigue" -- better known as PTSD today. At its height, the hospital would house 1,500 patients plus medical staff. It was decommissioned on 1 September 1946 and its property subsumed by the nearby Oakland Naval Hospital. It was reopened in 1951 to serve Korean War patients.

The US Navy sold this property to developers in 1964 and used the proceeds to fund the construction of a modern hospital building, imploded in 2011, at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital. The buildings were cleared and the land was developed into the Sequoyah Hills subdivision here today.
