Designed by St. James resident and architect, Lawrence Smith Butler in 1912. Butler descendant of the town’s founder Richard “Bull” Smythe and served as the creative force behind the iconic statue of Whisper the Bull that now stands at the intersection of Routes 25 and 25A. Structures designed by Butler’s architecture firm Ford, Butler & Oliver remain important features of the community such as the St. James Fire House, and the the Old Smithtown Library.
