Founded in 1905, the Elks initially met in a building at Palos Verdes and Seventh streets. After a 10-year fundraising effort, the lodge purchased the 11-acre site overlooking the harbor for $60,000. When it comes to smart land deals, this one, in retrospect, ranks near the top.

Plans were drawn up to build a $1 million facility that would include banquet facilities, a cocktail lounge, 150-seat dining room, health club facilities, a gymnasium, swimming pool and saunas.

It was completed in 1968 and soon became a focal point for social gatherings that spread far beyond the lodge use. Before long, wedding receptions, baby showers and birthday celebrations were booked at the facility.

The lodge was destroyed in an April 15, 2014 arson fire by Elks member Nick Pecarich of San Pedro. A new lodge was constructed in December 2017 to replace it.
