Place famous for war of Sepoy Mutiny (1857AD). A group of Sepoy of 34 Native Infantry Regiment at Chittagong revolted against the British and came out from Barracks with arms in their hands. They gunned down some of the British officers, attacked the Jail and released the prisoners of Swadeshi Movements, looted the district treasury. British administration plunged in to all out action against the unruly army men. They were attacked in several places. The Sepoy who revolted, started to proceed towards north. A big group of Sepoy walked through the villages of Coomilla district during night and reached Latu in Sylhet district (presently in Karimganj district of Assam, India). They took shelter in a jungle called Maalegarh. But the Britishers managed to know about their where about. An well equipped army troop attacked Maalegarh and a heroic fight was fought by the revolutionary army of Infantry Regiment. 26 Sepoy laid their lives in the battle. Some of them managed to escape. Through the jungles of Shon Beel, Gamariya, Sarash Pur, Company gunj some of those Sepoy reached Mohan Pur and take shelter on a Tilla full of jungle, on the right bank of Katakhal River. The then Chief Administrative Officer of Cachar Mr Robert Stuart sent a troop of army under Lieutenant Ross to Mohan Pur on 21 December 1857. They encircled the Tilla and on the next morning started firing. The native army fought a good fight here too but 12 of them lost their lives. One injured Sepoy was arrested from the place and hanged to death on a banyan tree near the ferry ghat of Mohanpur. In local language "Ron" means battle. So the name of the Tilla came in to existance as Ron Tilla. A nice Memoir of the Hero Sepoys have been erected here a few years back. Every year, on 22 December, people gather there and pay their homage to those Heroes who fought against the British army and laid their lives for the Independence of the Country, one and half century ago.
