Dedicated to paintings and sculptures of the 18th and 19th century. About 400 of the 3,000 paintings and 300 sculptures are constantly on display, among them works by Caspar David Friedrich, Spitzweg, van Gogh, Renoir, Manet, Monet, Cézanne, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and others.

Founded 1858 by king Ludwig I. as the world's first museum of "modern" art. Original building completely destroyed in World War 2. New building constructed in post-modern style in 1981.

The west wing houses the Doerner Institut, a world renowned facility for the restoration of paintings.
