Ludwig-Maximilians-University is Munich's largest university, and known to be one of Germany's top university. About 47,000 students and 700 professors are distributed over 18 different faculties. There are 160 different study fields which makes LMU one of the most diversified universities in the German speaking world.
During WW2, the White Rose (Weisse Rose) resistance group was founded by Sophie and Hans Scholl on university premises. The two were emprisoned by the secret police (Gestapo) while distributing flyers within this main building of the university.
