Deokyang Seowon was erected in 1592 to commemorate the loyalty of General Seongseok Shin-ok of the Goryeo Dynasty but all the buildings, except An-gae and Ji-pa, were burned during the Imjinwaeran (Japanese invasion).

In 1665 the Seowon was rebuilt but damaged by flooding in 1673, 1678, and in 1695. Rebuilt again in 1821 when the 10 tablets inside the auditorium were added.

In 1871 Deokyang Seowon was eradicate by Daewonun's Seowon Buddhist Order, but in 1934 it was rebuilt by the descendants in Jeolla provinces. It was reorganized in 1968 and 1979 respectively. In 1981 Deokyang Seowon was designated Jeolla Provincial Monument #56.

The main building is Pyeongsan and the second is Yeosan, located on the high hill at Deoksan-ri.
