On October 31, 1901 the remains of 18 soldiers were removed from the Fort Ruby cemetery after being abandoned there for over 30 years. The remains were each placed in 2x4 wooden boxes and shipped to the San Francisco National Cemetery or other cemeteries for reburial.

At the SF National Cemetery, all unknown remains in the cemetery, including those from the early Western frontier camps, were consolidated into one plot marked by a granite marked inscribed UNKNOWN SOLDIER DEAD in 1934.

Only two graves remain today, likely the civilians who were also known to have been buried here.
