Ducal Castle (Bisaccia)

Italy / Apulien / Rocchetta SantAntonio / Bisaccia
 castle, museum, fortification

The ducal palace of Bisaccia originated as a Lombard castle, which was damaged by an earthquake in 1198 and rebuilt in the 13th century under Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen. The castle was visited by Frederick in 1250, and by his son Manfred in 1254. From 1600 to 1809, the castle was the residence of the Pignatelli dukes of Bisaccia. After the extinction of the male line of the family, the duchy reverted to the Neapolitan crown, before being granted to a branch of the House of La Rochefoucauld in 1851. The castle itself belongs to the commune since 1977.
