Earthoid Water Tower

USA / Maryland / Germantown /
water tower, mural, artwork, interesting place, 1978_construction, 20th century construction, 1970s construction

Constructed in 1978 by Chicago Bridge & Iron Company to increase water pressure for the growing Germantown area; the Earth globe mural was painted in Summer 1980 by Peter A. Freudenberg and took three months to complete. He used a National Geographic globe image and satellite photos from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for reference. The height of the water tower about 100 ft. and its tank capacity is about 2 million gallons. It won the "Steel Tank of the Year" award in 1980 from the Steel Plate Fabricators Association and pictures of the tank have been exhibited in numerous magazines.

Locals call it the "Big Blue Marble" and it can be seen from the nearby I-270, Germantown Road (MD-118), and from around the area.
