 cave / cave(s), gold mine

Hwaamdonggul , or Hwaam Cave, formerly the “Cheonpogwangsan Mine”, stretches out along 1.8 kilometers/1.1miles. 22,904kg/22. 5tons of pure gold was commercially mined here between 1922 and 1945. During the mining process large caverns, formed by water flowing underground, were discovered.

Today the cave has been transformed into a popular tourist destination. The old gold mine has been redeveloped with theme-based exhibits on mining, the history of the cave, processing of ore, uses of minerals (jewelry), and geology. Exhibits with figures and pictures, like those representing miners digging for gold, are placed throughout the cave to visualize the brutal existence of the miners under the Japanese occupation. Exhibits are tailored to adults and children.

At the end of the mine is the entrance the great natural caverns. It takes about an hour and a half to go all through the mine and caverns
