At 3:42 am on Sunday, April 29, 2007, the eastbound I-80 to eastbound I-580 connector collapsed after a tanker truck carrying 8600 gallons of gasoline crashed on the lower westbound I-80 to southbound I-880 connector, setting off an intense fire. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver was travelling at an "unsafe speed," lost control and overturned. The driver walked to a gas station and took a taxi to Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, where he was treated for second-degree burns on his hands, arms and face.

The collapsed connector was reopened on May 24, 2007 after round-the-clock repair work by construction firm C. C. Myers, who received a $5 million bonus in addition to their low bid of $867,075.
