A gravitational wave detector using an L-shaped laser interferometer with 300 meter long arms in the grounds of the Japanese
National Astronomical Observatory. It is primarily a research interferometer to develop techniques for future kilometer-scale
detectors, but could see gravitational wave events if "by chance" they occur in our galaxy. (Tama is the area of Tokyo where the
observatory is situated, and "tamatama" is Japanese for by chance.)
