Cheokpanam (hermitage) was initially built in 673 by monk Wonhyo, and was restored in 1938 by monk Gyeongheo. Cheokpanam was named after the myth describing how Wonhyo saved a thousand Chinese Buddhist monks from the destruction of their temple by throwing a small dining tray.
